The Unexpected Honor of Storytelling: A Reflection on JCI Syria

Sometimes, opportunities arise that feel less like assignments and more like a privilege. That’s precisely how I felt when Shoushig reached out, inviting me to conduct a storytelling training for Junior Chamber International (JCI) members across Syria. The date was January 29, 2022, a day etched in my memory.

I’ve always believed in the transformative power of storytelling. It’s not just about weaving narratives; it’s about connecting, inspiring, and fostering understanding. So, the chance to share this passion with such a dedicated group was genuinely exciting.

The training itself, conducted virtually, was a unique experience. Over 50 participants from cities like Banias, Damascus, Homs, Lattakia, Sweida, Tartus, Ugarit, and Wadi joined in. It was a diverse and engaged audience, eager to learn and explore the nuances of storytelling.

We delved into the heart of what makes a story resonate, focusing on crafting narratives that forge genuine connections. We explored techniques for boosting confidence in public speaking, mastering vocal tone and body language, and using effective communication strategies, especially when handling questions.

One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing the participants’ enthusiasm. They asked insightful questions, shared their own experiences, and demonstrated a genuine desire to hone their storytelling skills. It was a testament to the power of human connection, even across virtual platforms.

Looking back, I’m filled with gratitude for this opportunity. It wasn’t just about imparting knowledge; it was about being part of a community dedicated to growth and positive change. A special thank you to Shoushig Shoushanian for her invitation and for making this enriching experience possible.
